When carbohydrates are not digested in your small intestine, bacteria in your colon ferment these carbohydrates, causing gas to form. Unfortunately, these carbs are often high-fiber foods. Swallowed air. Whenever you eat or drink, you swallow air. You may also swallow air when you eat too fast or you are nervous. Some of that air goes down and builds up in your lower digestive tract.
